Simon,

Again thank you for your time in discussing the LoveNelson project. We have been talking extensively as to how we can be of help.

Firstly, I’d like to make it clear that we are online entrepreneurs first, web developers second.  We run our own commercial websites which places us in a very unique position. We always ask clients who are looking to forge a long term relationship with a developer on a commercial project to ask this very important question: “How much money have you made online?”

Invariably the answer is ‘none’ and the suggestions they make will be based on what they’ve read or conventional wisdom.

We have almost fifteen years of in-the-trenches-experience of problem solving to our credit.

With regard to Nelson/Tasman, for over two years we have been working with local businesses and were involved with the digital strategy talks. We are acutely aware that everyone knows the future is a digital one but that it’s not only complicated but highly intimidating.

Our solution has taken over eighteen months to develop. It’s been through endless strategy sessions and has evolved due to extensive feedback.

At this stage the software is fully developed, simplicity and education are the key to embracing a digital future.

Love Nelson

Currently, you are using the domain lovenelson.nz to drive traffic to your facebook page where there are products from different shops in the square mile of Nelson. The software you are using is Buddy Bid which is costing the shops $59 per month (+GST).

On playing with the software we instantly found a few bugs – when a bid is placed  you get this: I’m busy right now, sorry. You’re then required to log in and accept a request for personal information. We tried a couple of times and finally the bids became responsive … BUT …

We are trying to work out the benefit of pushing the user to your facebook page instead of a business owner’s own site. We obviously understand the use of Facebook to drive traffic but in our experience it’s a only a small element of an holistic approach that needs to be adopted.

We have a developed powerful multi-seller, e-commerce  software based on WooCommerce and WordPress which powers a site called eshops.co.nz (which we own and operate.)

In my opinion, your current set up simply isn’t doing its job from a business owner’s perspective as well as it could.  I don’t want to spend time picking it apart as that’s not very constructive, but suffice to say it is disjointed from a user and administrator perspective.

Love Nelson Online Shopping Mall

Here’s an example of a shop we run on The Mall: http://eshops.co.nz/firebuddy

A one-stop-shop for Nelson. This will generate it’s own traffic as business owners promote their shop to their customers, sell product, sell offers and drive traffic in store (even better for Nelson)

We know for a fact that Nelson businesses want a solution! … Many want an online presence but as we’ve discovered and you pointed out, they are confused.

The online mall is a simple to use as any online shop, with all the benefits of being part of one large, aggregated website.

  • 24/7 shopping, great for business and consumers
  • Business can sell online and take payments directly into their account
  • Business can test new products
  • Business will be given help and advice as to how to sell and grow online – help that is not available elsewhere.

The proposal will include help and training from gauk Media helping with sustained growth and well managed sales. The low cost subscription model ($47 a month) makes it very affordable and easy to opt in and opt out.

With regard to education we started to run a  monthly meet and greet at the Vic for people to come along and learn how the online world works – it’s a great informal way to get questions answered. Uniquely Nelson predecessor was keen to develop this but moved on.

We believe this approach is the key to growing online for Nelson and the wider community.

FACEBOOK

Our suggestion is to replace the BuddyBid model and allow business owners to post directly to a LoveNelson dedicated page. Customers can browse a stream of special offers and LoveNelson will drive traffic back to the business’s website or presence.

We use our online marketing experience to build a Facebook page with engaging content that goes viral BUT … contrary to conventional wisdom, we don’t use Facebook as our hub.  This is the ‘conventional wisdom’ mistake.  Our experience over many years has shown that Facebook is not designed to help build business, it is designed to sell Facebook advertising who actively suppress organic business growth.  That’s exactly what the facebook Boost button is for, pay to reach people that want to, and have asked to, receive your posts but which Facebook actively blocks.

Facebook is a vehicle to be used to drive traffic to the Nelson community using our proprietary social media tools.

TWITTER

We use our online marketing experience to build a better Twitter page with engaging content that goes viral BUT … contrary to conventional wisdom, we don’t use Twitter as our hub. We don’t rely on twitter for our content.  Twitter is to be seen as another source to draw from, not rely upon.

OTHER SOCIAL NETWORKS

We use our online marketing experience to build a network over all social networks including Pinterest, Instagram, Linkedin etc

BLOG AND ARTICLE SYNDICATION

To develop the blog in a vibrant and engaging way. A focus on YOU, not US … we constantly ask: What do YOU want to hear?

SERPs (search engine page results) During testing the Online Mall we propose features very highly in Google for a number of reasons:

  • Site architecture up to standard
  • The site is fully optimised image-wise and user friendly
  • The site encourages comment and activity
  • There is a greater footfall due to multiple sites
  • The site has regular, original content

LOCAL SEARCHES

  • We ensure local search visibility

ENGAGEMENT

  • My recommendations for the LoveNelson campaign will achieve this – website & campaign focus on ‘YOU’ not ‘US’

NEWSLETTER & LIST BUILDING PROGRAMME

  • To develop a vibrant point of communication
  • To develop active list building from partner websites, affiliates and social media
  • To develop obvious points of entry and clear propositions

The Deal

We would look to create a LoveNelson, multi seller website at our cost integrating the software into the back end and placing it on the lovenelson.nz domain

  • The design of the site will be done at reseller rate of $597+GST
  • Hosting fee for LoveNelson site $49+GST per month to cover hosting and keeping the software/security up to date.
  • Shop owner charged $47+GST per month for fully branded online shop with as many products and offers as they wish.
  • Setup would be $97+GST and include 5 products. So we would create the shop, add in business info, create a banner, map, social links, contact details and 5 products to get them started.
  • We would charge for setting up a business Paypal account ($47+GST) if the owner does not have one. Allows customers to pay by credit card and buy multiple products from multiple vendors within LoveNelson site. Software organises payments to different business owners directly into their account.
  • From uniquelynelson.co.nz businesses will have a link for their shop.

We would look to help with ideas and continued education by setting up a monthly or fortnightly meeting which allows the shop owner to come and meet up and we can answer any questions they may have, help put their products on their shop, educate them on how to run their online shop and much more.
